Kleine Geschäfte, die an die alte Zeit erinnern, Kurzwaren, verschiedene Bars, Fast-Food-Restaurants im ursprünglichen Stil, alte neoklassische Gebäude und Arkaden, bilden zusammen den Charakter der Kolokotroni-Straße, die zum Zentrum des Tages- und Nachtlebens der griechischen Hauptstadt geworden ist. Man kann sagen, dass es eine Mischung aus der alten und modernen Lebensweise der Athener ist.

Der alte Name der Straße lautete “Königspalaststraße”, da sich dort die vorübergehende Residenz von König Otto befand. 1832, nach der Befreiung Griechenlands, wurde der bayerische Prinz Otto zum ersten König des Landes.

Die Kolokotroni-Straße liegt neben der Stadiou-Straße, wo sich das Alte Parlamentsgebäude befindet. Das griechische Parlament war dort von 1875 bis 1935 untergebracht, bis es am 1. Juli 1935 in den Königspalast umzog, wo es sich noch heute befindet. Später wurde das alte Parlamentsgebäude an die Historische und Ethnologische Gesellschaft Griechenlands übergeben und beherbergt heute das Nationale Historische Museum.

Wenn man die Kolokotroni-Straße überquert, sieht man das berühmte luxuriöse Schmuckgeschäft “Zolotas” und in der Bolanis-Arkade das Restaurant “Kentrikon”, das seit 1971 ein künstlerischer und politischer Treffpunkt der Hauptstadt ist. Es gibt auch die “Junior Girls Training Society”, eine 1872 gegründete gemeinnützige Organisation. Erwähnenswert ist auch, dass dort im November 1896 die erste Filmvorführung mit einer Edison-Filmkamera stattfand.

The 3-storey building at 3 Kolokotroni street along with the adjacent one at number 5, were constructed in the decade of 1880, having the early style of a large urban residence with stores at the ground floor. At number 13, there is the Army Pension Fund which was established in 1852 for ‘supporting and assisting the War of Independence (1821 – 1833) veterans as well as the killed fighters’ widows and orphans.’

Moreover, walking through Kolokotroni street you will also come across number 30 where there is a shop selling wool knitting yarns since 1935; at number 55, there is the ‘Carolina’ hotel set up in 1936 by a Hellenic-American company from South Carolina. It is one of the oldest Athenian hotels housed in a neoclassical building that was equipped with the first elevator of the city.

And last but not least, at number 57 there is one of the most historical bars of the city center, the ‘Booze Cooperativa’, housed in a building of 1860. It has monastery tables while ((((( οι χειροποίητες κότες που κρέμονται από το ταβάνι είναι φωτιστικά????? ))))) the hand-made ceiling lamps are in the shape of hens. Mr Nikos Louvros, the bar owner, recalls the time when in the area there were only wholesale shops and small handicrafts.

In two words, we can say that Kolokotroni street is one of the few streets of the city of Athens where the old and the new co-exist in a charming way, offering, at the same time, precious old memories and brilliant modern concepts…..
